Castellana Grotte and Polignano A Mare

Castellana Grotte

As the name says, they have caves and we do encourage you to go and see them. There are guided tours in English and in Italian, short and long tours. If you go, make sure to take the long tour.

Tickets can also be pre-ordered online.

There are also performances with singing and dancing in the caves e.g. “Hell in the Cave” and often also with all kinds of stalls around the entrance of the caves.

Here is the link to the Facebook page of this spectacle.

The distance from Villa Lavanda: half an hour’s drive. The place itself is Castellana and certainly worth visiting. On Saturday morning there is a market.

Furthermore Castellana lies on the route to Polignano A Mare.

Polignano A Mare is a very picturesque town, also locally very popular to go for a walk, eat an artisan ice cream or eat in one of the many restaurants.

The town on the Adriatic Sea is built on steep cliffs. The coast is very rugged and has many caves, a given that attracted the early inhabitants very much. Polignano is of Greek origin. The medieval centre is an accumulation of houses and alleyways. The main square is Piazza dell’Orologio where you find the most important church, the Chiesa Madre from 1295.

The singer Domenico Modugno (1928-1994) was born in Polignano a Mare. He became famous with the song “Dipinto nel Blu” better known as Volare …

It is also possible to make a trip by speedboat at Polignano. That takes you into several sea caves around this beautiful place and from the sea you also have a magnificent view at the town.
